en Dictionaries are boring, right? Although this work is a dictionary and grammar resource, Grammar and Dictionary of Quichua by Clements R. Markham tells a story far greater than meets the eye. In his work, Markham details the complexities of the Quechua grammar and provides a basic English to Quechua translation dictionary as well. Interestingly, he uses the word Quichua to describe the language Quechua; even though the two are distinct languages, this inclusion suggests the two were used interchangeably in this period.This hardback book was published in London in 1864, a time when few people traveled to Peru or had much of any knowledge of the South American continent. This author details in his introduction that he has visited Peru twice and gathered most of his linguistic and cultural information from speaking to locals, speaking to priests, and using centuries old dictionaries. In fact, the book is dedicated to a General Don Manuel de la Guarda, likely a high-ranking military officer he met on his travels. This dedication alone shows the personal interactions the author had with officials in Peru and the intimate knowledge he had of the Quechuan language.Although a seemingly odd decision, this book’s publication in England shows the expansion of globalization at this point in history as the author brought cultural and linguistic analysis of a distant place back to England to inform and spur the interest of people in England about Peru and the South American continent in general. With Quechua being so dissimilar to English, the author likely wanted to show how different this place was from England, and how many different cultures and places there were left to see in the world. Overall, this dictionary is a testament to globalization in the mid-19th century and shows how the far reaches of the globe were becoming more accessible with technological advancements.

Markham cuenta una historia mucho más grande que aparece. En su obra, Markham detalla las complejidades de la gramática quechua y provee traducciones básicas del inglés a la quichuay al español. Curiosamente, el autor usa la palabra Quichua para describir el idioma quechua; aunque los dos son idiomas distintos, esta inclusión sugiere que las dos palabras fueron usadas indistintamente. Este libro de tapa dura fue publicado en Londres en 1864, una época en que pocas personas viajaban a Perú o tenían mucho conocimiento del continente sur américa. Este autor detalla en su introducción que había visitado a Perú dos veces y recogía la mayoría de su información lingüística y cultural hablando a locales, hablando a curas, y usando diccionarios muy viejos. De hecho, el libro fue dedicado al General Don Manuel de la Guarda, probablemente un oficial militar que se encontró en su viaje. Esta dedicatoria demuestra las interacciones personales que el autor tenía con oficiales peruanas y el conocimiento íntimo que tiene del idioma quechua. Aunque parece como una decisión extraña, la publicación de este libro en Inglaterra demuestra la expansión de la globalización a este punto en la historia con el análisis cultural y lingüístico que el autor trajo a Inglaterra para informar y generar interés en Perú en la gente inglesa. Con la inclusión de ingles y quechua en la misma obra, era probable que el autor quisiera demostrar de cómo los diferentes Perú e Inglaterra y cuantos lugares diferentes hay en el mundo para explorar. En conclusión, esta obra es un testamento a la globalización en esta época y evidencia cómo los lugares más lejos del mundo llegaron a ser más cercos con los avances de la tecnología.
