Reagan Says U.S. Should Meet 3 of Khomeini's 4 Demands on Hostages
In this short piece by the New York Times, published September 16, 1980, author Douglas Kneeland recounts how candidate Reagan declared the United States should move to meet Ayatollah Khomeini’s terms for release of US hostages. In an interesting piece of politics, candidate Reagan called for action that would release American hostages, an action which would have had popular support, criticized president Carter’s handling of the crises by asserting that the United States should had never opened negotiations in the first place, all while vowing not to make the hostage crisis into a partisan affair. Overall, Reagan’s comment came from a position of political and public support as the article was run on the same page as articles entitled “Staff Quietly Plans for a Reagan Presidency” and “Reagan Given an Edge in ‘Big 9’ Battleground States”.
